Animal Crossing: New Horizons Sells Over 22 Million Copies, Becomes Best Selling Title in Series

It's no secret that Animal Crossing: New Horizons had been selling exceptionally well, but thanks to Nintendo's latest Fiscal Year earnings, we now know exactly how any copies it's sold! The game has sold 22.4 million copies, which is the second best selling Switch game to date, only behind Mario Kart 8 Deluxe at 26.74 million, and the best selling game in the series, beating out New Leaf at 12.45 million copies.

The sales are current as of June 30th, 2020, which was over a month ago, meaning the game has sold more copies since then. Even though it's still early days the game could very well become the Switch's best selling title, especially considering it's not even been out for 5 months. To compare, titles that have been out for over a year, including Breath of the Wild, Smash Ultimate, and Super Mario Odyssey, have sold 18.6, 19.99 and 18.06 million copies, respectively. The only close contender is Pokemon Sword and Shield, which is nearing its first birthday this November, sitting at 18.22 million copies.
What this means for the series going forward is anyone's guess. Nintendo has already mentioned they plan on adding regular updates to the game, so whether or not these incredible sales are going to change what they add, or how long they plan to continue supporting the game are unknown.
